MEET THE EXEC

CO-PRESIDENT - Maya Spence

3rd Year Chemistry
Gospel Choir has been my biggest surprise so far at university, coming from a mostly classical background it wasn't what I imagined myself doing at university. But since joining the choir I haven't looked back. The gospel choir community are so welcoming and friendly that I fell in love with it on my first rehearsal. The energy and uplifting feeling you get through singing gospel is like no other and it keeps you coming back for more. As co-president this year I want to push the choir to new heights whilst keeping to our roots of community love and joy. Over the last year we have really shown what we are capable of and with the talent on our exec this year I am certain we can only build on that!

CO-PRESIDENT - Abbie Longmate

2nd Year English Literature
I fell in love with Gospel Choir in my first ever rehearsal, and from then on, I knew it would be my favourite part of the week. In freshers’ week, I was looking for a society which offered something a little different: a community. Gospel choir certainly did this. Not only are the people in the choir lovely, they are also extremely talented, and it feels so good to rehearse and perform with such an amazing bunch of people. Although I’ve always had a love for gospel music, it is a style that is widely and easily loved, and creates such a feel-good atmosphere. We have lots of exciting things planned for this year, and we can’t wait to get started. It’s going to be a fabulous year!

CO-MUSICAL DIRECTOR - La'Marisa Barclay

2rd Year Geology
My first year at Durham was overwhelming, fun and exciting and a big reason for that is the gospel choir. Performing in various events such as: balls, cathedral concerts, graduations, competitions and our own concerts have been amazing. I have never experienced a choir so excited about gospel music as this one. Every time I stepped into rehearsals all my stress was forgotten. The choir community is so friendly and welcoming, and I am beyond excited to conduct the choir with George this year. I can’t wait to share with you what we have been working on!

CO-MUSICAL DIRECTOR - George Bone

3rd Year Music
Up until my second year of university, joining a Gospel Choir sadly alluded me. However, Gospel Choir has been the biggest, and best, surprise of my time at Durham. Some the highlights of being at university have been amongst these amazing people. Producing timbres of the highest quality has given me infinitely more joy than solo performances, composing or even my degree (oops). Therefore, it is an honour and a privilege to be elected as the co-Musical Director for next year! The ethos of inclusivity and friendliness that runs through this choir is something that I want to build on during my time next year, as well as: expanding our repertoire, allowing for more creative freedom and, most importantly, having fun!!

TREASURER - Michael Heron

3rd Year Maths
Hey I’m Michael, a third-year maths student and I will be the choir’s treasurer this year. I joined the gospel choir last year and it has been a wild ride. From performing in national competitions to singing in the streets of Seville we really experienced it all. I love the laid back but professional environment that our choir creates. We are able to have the best time singing with friends but although we don’t take ourselves too seriously we still sound incredible. The choir has given me so many memories to treasure.

PUBLICITY OFFICER - Abi Brown

2nd Year Geography
My name is Abi, and I'm an alto from Bristol. In my first year of uni, I was so worried about making friends and joining the right societies - but after finding Gospel Choir, I really had no need to worry, From our incredible tour to Spain, to competing nationally and coming second in UGCY, to winning Palatinate Society of the Year, Gospel Choir has been the highlight of my year and is something I am so proud to be a part of. My role as publicity officer is to advertise all our incredible shows and keep our social media (follow us ;) ) updated.

SECRETARY - Alice Slade

2rd Year Biology
My name is Alice, I’ll be your secretary for next year! I’m 2nd year biologist from Cuth’s. I joined Gospel choir in January of first year and it has been the most joyful part of my Uni experience. I can’t wait to be as involved as possible with the choir this year as your new Mrs Moneypenny.
